History

In 1953, I.N. and Bernardine Hagan purchased 80 acres in the mountains above Uniontown, Pennsylvania, where their families had lived for generations. They were friends of the Kaufmanns, owners of nearby Fallingwater, and asked Mr. Wright to design a home for them.

Wright was then 86 years old, and was working on some 15 other buildings, including the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Price Company Tower in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania, and about 13 residences. He situated the Hagans’ home, a magnificent Usonian, near the 2,050-foot summit of Kentuck Knob.

The Hagans lived in the home for almost 30 years. In 1986 they sold the property to Lord Peter Palumbo of London, England, who opened the house and grounds to public tours in 1996.
